CanSkate

This program is a 45 minute group lesson designed for children who have either graduated from the PreCanSkate program or have some skating experience. Skaters must be able to balance on skates for entry into this program.

This program offers skills taught in six stages of learning a complete series of balance, control and agility skills that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating, figure skating and general recreational skating.

Skaters are grouped according to age and/or ability, with typical age range for this program being 5 - 13. Age appropriate toys, other props and visual aids may be used during the lessons. Circuits will be drawn on the ice for skaters to learn and practice their skills.
Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation, see level progression below.

Equipment
Hockey or Figure Skates, and CSA approved hockey helmets with chin strap are mandatory for all skaters.
Face masks (cages) are recommended for younger skaters and skaters who wear glasses.
Ski pants, Warm jacket & mittens (no thin finger mitts).
